Whilst their fellow Year 11 classmates were undertaking Work Experience across the region, 11 students successfully undertook a Skid Steer Loader License with CITS in Hamilton. The Year 11 students, who already gain valuable experience in the workforce through their Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning studies, undertook the course to better enhance their skills before they enter the workforce at the completion of their studies. Mr Phil Wheaton, VET/VCAL Coordinator said it was great opportunity for the boys to get a recognised industry License whilst still undertaking their VCAL studies. "Many of the students are undertaking School Based Apprenticeships in building, plumbing, work in agriculture or are training as mechanics. Whilst this course is not currently embedded into the VCAL certificate, it was offered so that the students have an extra qualification to call on." The course was held for five days and covered the theory and practical components on the operation of skid steer and front-end loaders. The practical aspects included carrying out daily maintenance, efficiently moving various types of material, loading trucks and spreading and packing down material. "The five day timeframe enabled the students to consolidate their learning by coming everyday and reinforcing important practices and skills." Mr Wheaton said. Monivae Principal Mark McGinnity went and saw the students undertake a portion of the course and was impressed by the students' dedication and the skills they displayed. "The opportunity for these boys to undertake industry recognised training before they enter the workforce gives them such an advantage. They all worked very hard and I was pleased to get such positive feedback from CITS on the way students conducted and dedicated themselves during the week."
